Was This Summer Your AC System’s Last?

How comfortable were you this summer? Really think about it. Yes, when we are going outside and spending time in the heat, we expect to be hot but the same shouldn’t apply to when we are in our homes. If you found yourself struggling to stay cool over the past several months it likely means you need an air conditioning service in Pleasant Hill, CA.

If you had an especially uncomfortable summer, it may mean that you need to call about a system replacement, rather than the usual repair. Let’s look at the signs that will let you know your AC has seen its last summer.

Age

How long have you had your air conditioner? If it’s only been a few years, then chances are that, unless it was installed incorrectly, a repair should allow you to get plenty more years out of the system. On the other hand, if your AC has been around for 10 to 15 years, then you likely should get the process started to plan for a replacement system.

Efficiency

Your air conditioner is made to run as efficiently as possible. If the system is driving up your energy bills on the regular, however, it isn’t exactly going to be energy efficient. Make sure to keep an eye on your energy bills and, if you see monthly increases despite getting your AC the maintenance and repairs it usually needs, it may mean it is time to upgrade.

Operation

Think about how effectively your air conditioner performed over the past few months. Was the airflow strong and the temperature reliably cool? Did it produce full-length cooling cycles without trouble? Or did the system short cycle constantly and struggle to produce cool air of any kind? If you have had to do battle with your cooling system this last summer to enjoy any comfort at all, it likely means that this system is ready to be replaced.

Repairs

The need for repairs isn’t abnormal. However, the frequency and price of those repairs might be.

Repairs should really only pop up once every few years, especially if you are getting regular tune-ups on a yearly basis. If you have begun to need repairs for your system more often than this, it might be a sign your system is on its way out.

Likewise, if your repair bills are getting too high, it may mean you would be better off spending that money on a new system. A good rule of thumb to remember is that if the cost of repairs is equal to half or more of the cost of a new AC, your money would be better spent on the upgrade.
